Frequently Asked Questions?

Some questions come up all the time and a few of the more common ones are answered below to help you make an informed choice.

If you aren't sure about anything then please just ask, there is no such thing as a stupid question and we will always answer honestly.

If we don't know the answer, we will say so and do our best to find out for you.

  • Are metal gates and railings expensive?

Made to measure or made to order fabricated metal products have always been a little more expensive at the point of purchase.

At the end of the day you are having a product made for you and it is likely to last you a very long time.

The cost of steel, powder coating, and component part prices have risen due to global events, which has seen prices for the consumer rise as well.

We always try to give our cutomers the best price we can and are always willing to discuss any quotation with you.

  • Do your quotations include installation?

In most cases the quote you will recieve is fully inclusive of design, manufacture, painting, and installation of all supplied metalwork, and includes all required fixings and sundry items.

  • Is what you make the same as the stuff I can get off the internet?

No, the metalwork we produce is always designed and manufactured in our Lincoln workshop.

In some cases the products on the internet are of good quality, but there are a lot of items on the market, specifically foreign imports, which look well enough but are made from inferior materials and are not likely to last very long.

Its also worth taking the time to go beyond the initial screen price, adding all the other bits and bobs you'll need, add on the delivery, etc, etc.

Once you realise that with all that factored in, you'll then have to install it your self....you get the idea.

All our products are made from quality materials, with personalised considered designs, and they are made to measure.

  • Do your quotations include VAT?

Culverwell Wrought Iron Ltd is currently in the process of registering for VAT.

As such our quotations all have VAT added.

This is explained clearly on each quotation we issue.

  • Whats the difference between Wrought Iron and Steel?

The main difference between them is that wrought iron is composed entirely of iron, whereas steel contains an alloy of iron and carbon. Carbon makes steel a little stronger than wrought iron, which can help it withstand the elements and resist damage.

The word "wrought" is an archaic past participle of the verb "to work", and so "wrought iron" literally means "worked iron"

Wrought Iron is no longer produced in commercial quantity, although some specialised supplier do still produce/reclaim the material for use in specific projects.

  • Do you do supply only?

We do supply certain products on a supply only basis, and historically this has been mainly for commercial clients.

We are happy to discuss supply only if this is something that would work better for you.

  • How long before I have to paint the metalwork?

Ths question has  a fairly broad series of answers as factors such as environment, maintenance, type of paint finish, how fresh you want it to look, etc.

In general if an item is hand painted properly with a primer, undercoat and top coat applied, the paint should remain in good order for around 3+ years.

If an item is powder coated you can expect a longer service life before repainting.

Our powder coating features an epoxy type primer and an external grade top coat and call backs are few and far between and normally relate to damaged paintwork.

Remember to keep your painted metalwork clean and only wash with a preparatory product or mild dish soap, do not use abrasive, caustic, or chemical cleaners.

  • Do Automatic Gates need to be serviced Annually?

In short, yes, annual servicing should be undertaken as a matter of course.

    The reasons for this are,

    • To help ensure safe operation of the gate.
    • To identify any potential safety or maintenance issues before they turn into larger problems.
    • To increase the service life of what was likely a very expensive addition to your home.
    • To keep apprised of possible functional and safety upgrades that may be available for your gate.

Annual servicing of manually operated gates can also be beneficial to increase the life of the gates .
